Tired of having your images re-cropped in a wonky fashion by Facebook? Half a hamburger (shown above) and people with their heads missing just doesn’t make sense. The charts below should help with getting your images to look the way they’re supposed to on social media. Keep in mind that social media sites display images in aspect ratios that suit their Barnum & Bailey interface designers — nothing a professional (or even amateur) photographer would want. Unfortunately, with social media, it’s a “take it or leave it” situation.
As social media is constantly in a state of flux, this information is just a guideline for image sizes. Your results may vary as social media sites, especially Facebook, don’t always seem to follow their own published rules. For high quality images on existing retina displays, and future high-resolution displays, prepare images at 150 dpi.
For my own blogs, I usually prepare images with a long edge of 900 px to 1200 px @ 150 dpi resolution; however, I override images in social media posts to the following specifications. For better performance and faster load times, be sure to compress image files before uploading them to websites and social media.
